GSOE Welcomes Assistant Professor Marsha Ing

The UCR Graduate School of Education welcomes Assistant Professor Marsha Ing to its faculty this fall. Ing earned her doctorate in education research methods at UCLA. She began her undergraduate career as a student at the University of Hawaii, initially in the teacher education program. Ing knew she always wanted to work in education and as an undergraduate discovered her passion for research which led her to change her major to educational psychology. After graduating with her BA, Ing entered UCLA and obtained her MA. She worked in the field for a few years before returning to UCLA to earn her Ph.D.

Ing’s research focuses on how students learn math. She specializes in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and is able to analyze data sets at the national level as well as conduct case studies of individual classrooms. The quality of mathematics education is an important issue and Ing hopes that her research will be relevant for teachers in the local area as well as nationally.

Dean Steven Bossert noted that Marsha Ing “fits into GSOE in a number of ways. She is very strong in quantitative methodology and her training will allow GSOE to expand its offering in statistical methods and applications.” In addition, her work which “focuses on student learning in math and science will add depth to GSOE’s curriculum and instruction program as well as STEM, science, technology, engineering, and math education.”

Ing is excited about the research going on UCR’s GSOE. She looks forward to collaborating with other GSOE faculty on future research projects.
