Program Outcomes

Although there are multiple ways to assess the success of a graduate program, at UCR we have chosen the following sources of information.

 Student Population Upon Entering UCR

We are very proud of the quality of our students in the School Psychology Program. The average GRE combined Verbal and Quantitative GRE scores is slightly greater than 1150 and almost all of our students score above 600 on the Psychology Subject exam. The average GPA is greater than 3.3 and many students have GPAs greater than 3.7.

Professional Success at UCR

The UCR School Psychology program has a very strong record of ensuring all Ph.D. students are employed on research grants or receive academic fellowships. Currently, 100% of our Ph.D. students are supported on research grants that pay for tuition and provide a substantial stipend. All Ph.D. students present at least one time at a national or state conference. The Graduate Division provides funds for students to travel out of state if they have a paper accepted. Approximately 85% of our students publish an article in a refereed journal or a chapter in professional textbook while at UCR. Several of our students have published two or more manuscripts.

Success Completing the Program

Eighty three percent of students admitted to the School Psychology Ph.D. program over the last 10 years have completed the program. Those who have quit the program have typically left because of a change in family commitments. Eighty-two percent of our students complete the program within 5 years, with most completing the program at the end of their 5th year. The remaining 18% of our graduates complete the program within 6 years. We currently do not have any graduates who have taken more 6 years to complete the program.

Success on Internship

All of our students are required to complete a 1500 hour internship. Most students choose to conduct the internships in school settings, although about 10% choose to complete APA approved internships in consortiums that include schools and clinic/hospital settings. All of our students are paid while on internship. The pay varies greatly ($22,000-$60,000).

Success After the Program

All of our graduates over the last 10 years were employed immediately after graduation. Most students’ starting salaries are above $60,000. Most of our graduates are employed in school settings and some work as private consultants providing guidance on issues related to behavioral or academic concerns. Approximately 45% of our graduates either work full-time in university environments or provide part-time instruction and work in a local school district. All of our graduates become credentialed as school psychologists and about 10% become Licensed Psychologists.
