Dr. Margaret Nash receives the
2009 Dolores Grayson Research Award
Dr. Margaret Nash is the recipient of the 2009 Dolores Grayson Research Award, which was established in 2006 to honor Dr. Dolores Grayson, a lifelong advocate for gender equity and first recipient of the award. Dr. Nash will join a handful of active members of the Association for Gender Equity Leadership in Education (AGELE) having achieved excellence in scholarship, and research related to gender equity in education. Dr. Nash will be formally awarded and recognized on August 3, 2009 at the Marriot Manhattan Beach Hotel in Manhattan Beach, California.

Dr. Anne Jones appointed to
the Committee on Accreditation (COA)
On April 24th, 2009, the Commission on Teacher Credentialing selected Dr. Anne Jones, Director of Teacher Education, along with 2 other educators, to join veteran colleagues on the Committee on Accreditation (COA). The COA is a statutory committee appointed by the Commission and charged with approving the initial and continuing accreditation of educator preparation programs. Dean Steven Bossert nominated Dr. Jones for this position. In making the appointment, the Commissioners publicly commented on the exceptional qualifications of Dr. Jones and each appointee. Congratulations Dr. Jones!
GSOE Spotlight March 12th, 2009
The Journal of African American
History publishes winning article.
"The 'Long Movement' as Vampire: Temporal and Spatial Fallacies in Recent Black Freedom Studies" by Sundiata Keita Cha-Jua and Clarence Lang, which appeared in the Spring 2007 issue of The Journal of African American History, has been selected as cowinner of the 2009 EBSCOhost America: History and Life Award. This award is given biennially to recognize and encourage scholarship in American history in the journal literature advancing new perspectives on accepted interpretations or previously unconsidered topics. As editor of the journal, Dr. V.P. Franklin will receive a certificate.

2008 Strategies for Understanding College
and Careers in Engineering and Science (SUCCES) Day
Over 600 attended The Copernicus Project’s annual college and science exploration day for local middle and high school students and their families. In collaboration with UCR’s Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) School Programs and the Boy’s & Girl’s Clubs of San Bernardino, Strategies for Understanding College and Careers in Engineering and Science (SUCCES) Day included a welcome from UCR Chancellor Timothy P. White, workshop sessions on college admissions and financial aid, a tour of UCR, and hands-on science activities. During lunch, attendees participated in a technology and college resource exposition. Campus departments and science businesses host tables with collegiate information and additional hands-on science activities.

Copernicus Project Hosts
2008 Summer Science Institute
The Copernicus Project hosted 160 elementary school teachers from their eight partner school districts (Alvord, Corona-Norco, Jurupa, Moreno Valley, Palm Springs, Rialto, Riverside, and Val Verde), Noli Indian School District, the Lewis Center for Educational Research, and the Norton Space and Aeronautics Academy. The focus of the 2008 Science Summer Institute was combining science and literacy, implements inquiry based teaching methods, and utilizing new, hands on science activities in elementary classrooms. Over the course of the two weeks, participants were subject to 24 hours of science content, from astronomy, chemistry, earth science, life sciences, or physics. Workshops for English language learners and technology were also presented.

2008 Commencement
The University of California, Riverside celebrated its 54th Commencement this year. The Graduate School of Education recognized a substantial number of dedicated students; six Ph.D., six Master’s, 42 M.Ed. and 116 Teaching Credential Candidates all representing the GSOE participated in Monday night’s ceremony on Pierce Lawn. GSOE Ph.D. candidate Patrick Guggino was a Commencement speaker, and Teacher Education student Ashley Peterson beautifully sang the National Anthem.

GSOE Hosts 10th Annual Educating the Bilingual Student Conference
The 10th annual EBS conference hosted workshops that centered on this year’s theme, “Focusing on Opportunities to Learn.” The one day conference provides educators with opportunities to attend workshops that offer strategies, techniques and open discussion on teaching English language learners.

Susana Sanchez Awarded Rockefeller Brothers
Fund Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color
University of California, Riverside student Susana Sanchez has received one of the twenty-five highly competitive Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. These fellowships are intended to honor the highest achieving and most promising undergraduate students, wishing to pursue a graduate degree in education and teach in American elementary or secondary schools.

College Host Workshop
Dr. Audrey Jaeger, an Associate Professor of Higher Education at North Carolina State University, will be presenting a seminar on “Using Student Development Theory in Practice” on Friday, May 2, 2008 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Riverside Community College, Norco Campus in the Wilfred J. Airey Library, room 121. Participants will have a unique opportunity to model “theory to practice” through hands on activities and case studies. Additionally, open conversation will discuss, critique and adapt various student development theories as enhancement to their programs.

Ph.D. Student, Luis Cruz,
Wins $250,000 Grant
Luis Cruz is a doctoral candidate in GSOE’s Institutional Leadership & Policy Studies, as well as a principal of Baldwin Park High School. Cruz received the grant from the California Academic Partnership Program (CAPP), to help Baldwin Park High School ensure a path to college for its students. CAPP awards grants to partnerships between schools, higher education institutions and business entities to improve academic programs so that more students are prepared for college.

of our newly established
electronic journal.
The California Community College Collaborative (C4) at the University of California, Riverside is a research and policy center established by the University of California's Office of the President and the Chancellor's Office of the California Community Colleges. In support of C4's mission of improving community colleges a series of commissioned papers has been completed and are available to the public via the newly launched C4 e journal. To access this new journal go to the C4 website (www.C4.ucr.edu) and click on the link for the C4 electronic journal. Bookmark this site as we plan to continue publishing other issues of this journal with more articles pertaining to important issues facing California's community colleges and community colleges nationally.

Join Dr. Estela Bensimon for a workshop on "Equity for All: Using Communities of Practice to Address Disparities in Student Outcomes" on Friday, March 7, 2008 from 1:00-3:00 pm. Estela Mara Bensimon is Professor of Higher Education and the Director of the Center for Urban Education (CUE) at the USC Rossier School of Education. Her research interests include academic leadership, organizational change, social action research, urban colleges and universities, and women and minority faculty in education.
