Multiple Subject Credential


The Multiple Subject Credential is for candidates interested in teaching at the elementary level. It is a full-time post-baccalaureate program that begins in fall quarter and is completed in one academic year. Field and practicum experiences are completed at assigned school sites during the day and candidates will return to campus for late afternoon and evening classes. The required courses for the credential are listed in the table below and do not include the course requirements for the Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.).
Admission to the program is based on:
- Undergraduate GPA
- Passage of the Basic Skills and CSET Multiple Subject exams
- Letters of Recommendation
The following options are available for this credential program:
Option 1: Post-baccalaureate non-degree program. This program is ideal for individuals who only want to complete the requirements for a credential. A graduate degree is not awarded. For more information on admission deadlines go to the Teacher Education Admission web page. Recommended prerequisites for this program are:
- EDUC001 and EDUC002
- Health Education (EDUC044 or UCR Extension's Education X451.01)
- U.S. Constitution Requirement (POSC010 or HIST017A, an equivalent, or EDUC 850 at UCR Extension
Option 2: M.Ed. in Education with an emphasis in General Education - A graduate program in which exceptional teacher candidates (GPA of 3.2 or above) earn both the Multiple Subject credential and a Master’s degree in 12 months. (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring). More information about this program's prerequisites is available on the link above.
BCLAD in Spanish Emphasis: Candidates who are fluent in Spanish may also consider adding the Bilingual, Crosscultural, Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) emphasis in Spanish. This emphasis provides special training to help prospective teachers deliver content instruction in the student's primary language and instruction for English language development. Admission to this emphasis requires passage of the Spanish Proficiency Examination (scheduled through Teacher Education Admissions) and completion of the following prerequisite courses in each content area:
- Language Structure and Use: Choose one from LING020 or SPN105
- Culture and Cultural Diversity: Choose one from ENG021, ETST114, SPN120A, or SPN120C and one from ETST100 or SPN102B
- Language Development, Assessment, and Foundations: Choose one from ETST108F, ETST132, ETST146 or ETST163
