Single Subject Credential

Shaping the future one teacher at a time.Teacher and student.

The Single Subject Credential is for candidates interested in teaching specific subjects that are primarily offered at the middle school or high school level.  It is a full-time post-baccalaureate program that is completed in one year.  Student teachers complete field and practicum experiences at assigned school sites during the day and return to campus for late afternoon and evening classes.  The required courses for the credential are listed in the table below and do not include the course requirements for the Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.).

GSOE accepts applications for the following single subject content areas:
  • English
  • Languages other than English: French, German, or Spanish
  • Mathematics and Foundational Mathematics
  • Science: Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, Physics, and Foundational General Science
  • Social Science

Admission requirements can be found at Teacher Education Admission but is based on:
  • Undergraduate GPA
  • Passage of the CBEST and CSET exams
  • Letters of Recommendation

The following options are available:

Option 1: Post-baccalaureate non-degree program.  This program is ideal for individuals who  want to complete the requirements for a credential but do not want a Master's degree.  More information on admission deadlines is listed on the Teacher Education Admission link above.  Recommended prerequisites for this program are:

  1. EDUC001 and EDUC002 or EDUC003 and EDUC004 (mathematics and science candidates)
  2. Health Education (EDUC044 or UCR Extension's Education X451.01)
  3. U.S. Constitution Requirement (POSC010 or HIST017A, an equivalent, or EDUC850 at UCR Extension)

Option 2: M.Ed. in Education with an emphasis in General Education - A graduate program in which exceptional teacher candidates (GPA of 3.2 or above) earn both the Single Subject credential and a Master's degree in 12 months (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring).  More information about this program's prerequisites is available on the program link above.

Integrated Program for Mathematics and Science: This is a three quarter program that is ideal for both undergraduates and career changers who want to prepare for a career in teaching.  The program incorporates university internship preservice requirements that allow many candidates to be hired by a participating district while continuing to take courses for California licensure.   Choose from either option listed above for admission requirements.  Undergraduates should contact the Science Mathematics Initiative Office to develop a plan that would allow entry into the Graduate School of Education at the end of the senior year.
