Susana Sanchez Awarded Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color
University of California, Riverside student Susana Sanchez has received one of the twenty-five highly competitive Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. These fellowships are intended to honor the highest achieving and most promising undergraduate students, wishing to pursue a graduate degree in education and teach in American elementary or secondary schools.
Sanchez is in her third year at UC Riverside, pursuing a Bachelors degree in Chicano Studies, with a minor in History. She credits her experience as an A.V.I.D. tutor as her inspiration to pursue a career in teaching, “American History, and subsequently Chicano or Ethnic Studies is my chosen subject, but I want even more. The opportunity to give off some of my excitement to these students, to show them worlds of which they know little of and do it in a manner that is comforting, inviting and that fosters an appreciation for learning.”
