June 12, 2007
Three is a charm for graduate student Duran Valdez, who is this year's recipient of GSOE's Vivian Eyman and Irving H. Balow awards, as well as a scholarship from the California Retired Teachers Association.
Duran is working simultaneously toward a M.Ed. in general education and a Single Subject Credential in social science. His bachelor's degree from UCR is in history with a minor in creative writing.
The Irving H. Balow Endowment is awarded to a student who pursues a teacher credential and a graduate degree in alternate years. It is intended to help the recipient with education and living expenses.
The Vivian Eyman Award recognizes a student teacher who demonstrates great promise to become a teacher leader.
As an undergraduate, he was assistant editor-in-chief of UCR's literary magazine, Mosaic and received the William H. Willis Award.
