CEL Faculty

Serving the SOE Faculty

The goal of Community Engaged Learning is to enrich and extend the UCR coursework experience with applied, real-world learning, serving the population needs of SOE students, faculty, and partners. CEL provides experiences that encourage students to put into practice their learned knowledge of education theory, research, policy, and practice in ways that contribute to the mission of an educational or community organization through well-informed service.

How Faculty Can Get Involved

  • Service-Learning

The Community Engaged Learning (CEL) Program defines Service Learning as “a course based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility” (Bringle and Hatcher, p.112).

How to incorporate Service Learning into a course:

    1. Faculty will need to submit the Service Learning form to notify the CEL team of their interest in service learning. Our Program Manager/Faculty Liaison, Gisselle, will assist you throughout the process, if needed.
    2. Please note that a form must be submitted a year before the course will be taught. *The latest a faculty member can submit a form is two quarters before.
  • Research (EDUC 190)

Faculty Research: If a student is interested in assisting a faculty member on their research, they must…

    1. Ask the faculty member if they are accepting research assistants.
    2. If the faculty member agrees to have the student on their team, the student must work with their academic advisor to sign up for a research course.

If you are interested in creating an EDUC 190 Special Studies Course, please visit this link for more information on how to start the process.

Once you have finalized the details of the EDUC 190 and need help advertising the opportunity to students, please fill out the Request for Student Enrollment in EDUC 190 form.

    • Faculty members should submit the form at least 5 weeks before the start of the quarter.
    • The CEL team will advertise the opportunity and will direct students to contact you if they are interested. Therefore, please provide the email address that you would like for them to use on the advertisement form.
