Week 1

Welcome Back, Spring Quarter Kick Off

The SOE Ambassadors would like to help  you start your quarter off with information to start your quarter off strong. With invited guest from campus organizations to learn how to get involved, information about upcoming events, and  a fun time of connection with each other. This is a great opportunity to grow your network of peers and learn about opportunities to get involved in campus opportunities.

APA Format Presentation

This workshop covers the basics of APA format, including how to properly incorporate in-text citations with either a signal phrase or a parenthetical citation, how to cite multiple authors, and how to construct a reference page. As formats tend to change frequently, this workshop will cover changes from the previous edition to the most recent edition i.e., the 6th edition to the 7th edition. This workshop is essential for all students in Education courses, as instructors note that APA format errors occur frequently in student papers.

University students frequently practice their argumentative and analytical skills in their coursework by writing term papers, responding to discussion prompts, and summarizing research articles. However, students may not have been taught compositional fundamentals such as punctuation and grammar since at least high school. This workshop reviews grammar practices such as subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, irregular verbs, and more to help attendees feel confident in their punctuation abilities and improve their drafting and editing abilities for their university-level writing projects.

Education and other social science fields have their own unique language and expectations when compared to other academic disciplines. This workshop is designed to orient students to the process of writing and creating knowledge in the field of education studies and will focus on identifying and evaluating prior scholarship, synthesizing this scholarship to respond to writing prompts, and reviewing writing to ensure optimal impact. Upon completion of this workshop, students will be able to identify the underlying reasons for their faculty's expectations, navigate the transition from English composition to education writing conventions, and feel confident about their identities as emerging social scientists.

Research Skills for Education Majors UCR Library Collaboration

This workshop goes in-depth on research best practices, such as how to generate search terms; how to use Boolean operators; how to search using google scholar or the library databases (and the differences between them); and, how to identify reputable sources. This workshop is best for students beginning their upper-division Education coursework; however, it will benefit students at any point in their academic journey. Those students who are interested in pursuing graduate school will rely heavily on the skills obtained at this workshop.

Time to flex those presentation skills! This workshop covers tips and tricks for effective slideshows and allows participants the opportunity to develop and practice techniques for compelling presentations.

Week 9

Mindfulness and Writing Workshop 
Tuesday, 5/30 1pm-2pm

 Students interested in sharpening their focus, reducing their stress, and engaging more authentically with their coursework will love this workshop covering mindful practices. Attendees will be able to define mindfulness and implement strategies such as journaling, body scans, and purposeful breathing. Students will also be able to create plans for mindful writing and studying and learn how to cultivate their learning environments to better serve them throughout their academic careers.

 

Week 10

Week 10 Write-a-thon!
Thursday, 6/1 1pm-3pm

Are you working on a final paper? Do you often find yourself procrastinating, getting distracted, or making slow progress on your assignments?  Then you might just benefit from joining our write-a-thon! The week 10 write-a-thon will be a space for students to work on their final papers alongside each other as a community of writers with common goals. Many of us struggle to stay focused, procrastinate more than we should, or just generally get distracted while writing. The write-a-thon will allow students designated quiet time to write in a shared space filled with motivation and encouragement. SOE Writing Support team members will also be there to help with any questions or sticky areas of the writing process.
